maybe not but your identity as an adherent to a religion is usually associated - an atheist doesnt adhere to a religious system with associated moral/spiritual doctrine so its sometimes more relevant to mention a philosophical belief than saying "im atheist"

they went from one great evil corrupting society (the devil/"evil") to one great evil corrupting society (religion)

it's much easier to lie to ourselves than to accept that all living beings are designed to put themselves first, and that this causes us to hurt each other. it's much easier to ignore our observations and keep these other ideas than to look inside ourselves, see yur own evil, and take action. it's much more comfortable to characterize the root of all suffering as a distant other than to come to the logical conclusion of the situation- that that root is all around us, and even inside us, and the only way to get rid of it is to destroy life entirely or make it mostly obsolete and purposeless.oh god my pretentious writer is showing

also this thread reminds me of when ammy was on that /r/magicskyfairy kick

I get where you're coming from but that still rubs off as "le sheeple", that second paragraph anyways.
The devil, or adversary, is of course a symbol, a personification of immorality in all religions (from christianity to atheism to marxism -- before you stomp my balls I'm a firm believer that every belief can be attributed to religion. Like ol coolidge said, work is a temple and workers are worshippers)
This is not to say that people who believe in this distant adversary aren't to see the devils in themselves, or the mistakes and vices they make are entirely their fault.
There is something strange, I believe, about humanity, in that we have the capacity far more than any other animal to put ourselves before others. This is famously examplified in the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and many beliefs have their own form of this, and we need only to look in history, decent or recent, for stories of people putting their lives under the knife for others. It can be attributed to anything to soldiers to people making permanent sacrifices in their own life to accommodate the pleasure or well being of others. In this sense, belief is unifying, but I'm certain natural unity comes from a deeper place than simply ideological standpoint, I'm sure it's on a biological level.
Some attribute this capacity of selflessness to be a spark of the divine (recursive back to jesus christ and greek mythologies)
Any deeply religious person can make observations on the world and draw further conclusions and revelations, because his beliefs are not a blindfold rather than a different magnifying glass lens. Belief in god does not imply disbelief in science, and belief in magic does not imply disbelief in physics. (an entirely different can of worms for another time, though)

Also that thing you said about destroying and making obsolete life is buddhism
I see no sense in the sacrifice of desire for spared suffering.
