movies/books/tv general

Post by cya on June 25th 2015, 10:50 pm

i honestly feel like this could be merged with vidya because it is just going to be completely dead and take up space

on topic, i am currently reading 'the plot against america'

its good

its an alternative history novel about charles lindburgh winning the 1940 election instead of FDR and becoming a supporter of antisemitism and hitler's regime

main character is a jewish boy named phillip who has to suffer the effects of his family's persecution

"Roth has stated that the idea for the novel came to him while reading Arthur Schlesinger, Jr.'s autobiography, in which Schlesinger makes a comment that some of the more radical Republican senators of the day wanted Lindbergh to run against Roosevelt. The title appears to be taken from that of a communist pamphlet published in support of the campaign against Burton K. Wheeler's re-election to the U.S. Senate in 1946."

Lindbergh argued that America did not have any business attacking Germany and believed in upholding the Monroe Doctrine, which his interventionist rivals felt was outdated. In his autobiography, he wrote:

"I was deeply concerned that the potentially gigantic power of America, guided by uninformed and impractical idealism, might crusade into Europe to destroy Hitler without realizing that Hitler's destruction would lay Europe open to the rape, loot and barbarism of Soviet Russia's forces, causing possibly the fatal wounding of western civilization"

In the speech, he warned of the Jewish people's "large ownership and influence in our motion pictures, our press, our radio, and our government". He went on to condemn Nazi Germany's antisemitism: "No person with a sense of the dignity of mankind can condone the persecution of the Jewish race in Germany." Lindbergh declared,

“I am not attacking either the Jewish or the British people. Both races, I admire. But I am saying that the leaders of both the British and the Jewish races, for reasons which are as understandable from their viewpoint as they are inadvisable from ours, for reasons which are not American, wish to involve us in the war. We cannot blame them for looking out for what they believe to be their own interests, but we also must look out for ours. We cannot allow the natural passions and prejudices of other peoples to lead our country to destruction.”

The speech was heavily criticized as being anti-Semitic. In response, Lindbergh stated again he was not anti-Semitic, but he did not back away from his statements.

i dont think you quite understand how absolutely fucking dominant FDR was when he was president because charlie lindbergh would have been fucking crushed in literally any legitimate election against him

FDR won every election with a percentage of votes in the electoral college that was greater than 80% -- in 1944 it was 81.36%, in 1940 it was 84.56%, in 1932 it was 88.89% and in 1936 he garnished 98.49%

his worst showing in terms of electoral votes was in '44 when he got 443

his worst margin of victory was also in 1944, with a .627 margin

the only reason he didn't keep winning terms was because he died, if he'd kept running he would have likely been our president into the 1950s

having millions of people who listen to your speeches is nice and all but it's probably not going to dethrone the dude who lost just two states in the last election, which also happened to be the biggest landslide in presidential election history (barring the elections of george washington and james monroe which were never contested)
